Cannabis Waste is Being Used to Create New Paper Packaging Material

paper packaging material

Yes, you read that correctly. Cannabis (Marijuana) is being used to create a new paper packaging material. Due to the legalization of Marijuana for medical and recreational purposes in some states, there has been an increase in demand for cannabis cultivation. The increased demand has led to a rise in cannabis cultivation which directly leads to more bio-waste, namely, marijuana stalks.

Restalk LLC announced the first prototype of the paper in February 2016 and plans to go into commercial production this spring. Before you get all excited about the psychoactive effects of the cannabis paper, the company has confirmed that it contains “marginal levels of psychoactive properties”. In simple terms, there is hardly any THC in the paper so you wont be able to get high with it.

As of now, the company is planning for a commercial deployment by summer of 2016. The production will be scaled up in the second half of the year if the demand and supply chain increases. Initially, the company will service clients within the cannabis marketplace. Further avenues for incorporating the new paper packaging material will be explored. However, the safest bet right now is to reach out to relevant customers that will be able to relate with the product better.

The paper packaging might be able to work with other materials in the future. However, nothing can be said conclusively at the moment. A lot of time and efforts have gone into creating the paper packaging from cannabis bio-waste. Tests for blending the new packaging with different materials are going on but they are at a very nascent stage.

The important thing here is that the company is trying to test the blending capability of the new packaging with other sustainable materials. This will help to ensure that the final product is eco-friendly and cost effective also. When it does come out on a large scale commercial implementation, it will offer a wide range of solutions by giving new directions to packaging materials.

Global Sourcing For Custom Packaging Doesn’t Really Work Out Well for Businesses

Custom Packaging

Global sourcing works out well for most businesses due to the cost advantages that they get when approaching different markets. Custom products can be bought at “affordable rates” if you are able to get a suitable provider. When you look for prospects on a global scale, then the chances of getting better deals increase significantly. However, things may not always be beneficial when seeking global sourcing, especially for packaging materials.

Quality inconsistencies are one of the most prominent issues that comes up when sourcing globally. In the case of packaging materials, there are quality risks when ordering the required materials, especially if it is from a non-reputed vendor. Businesses are often lured into placing their order with vendors that give them a “great deal” that they are unable to resist. This is when problems start to unfold.

I am not saying that all non-reputed vendors are bad. It’s just that the level of risk tends to increase considerably with them. This can be a major problem if you are looking at a long term work. If you are satisfied completely with one vendor, then try to continue the relation for long term requirements.

Make sure that you analyze more than one order to understand the quality standards being followed by a particular vendor. Occasional minor quality inconsistencies can be overlooked. But repeated inconsistencies indicates higher risk which you need to avoid at all costs.

Apart from quality inconsistencies, time and distance are also major factors that need to be considered in global sourcing. Due to the large distances between point of origin and the destination, it may take a long time for the consignment to reach you. This is why you need to factor in possible delays so that the schedule doesn’t suffer in case of late deliveries.

International freight has to pass through customs and other security checks which can cause delays if the time has not been factored into the entire schedule. Packaging materials are used for packing items and sending it to the customer. If a business runs out of packaging materials with no ready stock available, then the deliveries might get delayed and it could end up with the customer cancelling the order. There is nothing worse than an unhappy customer.

The best way to overcome the problem is to look for packaging material suppliers online or source the packaging supplies locally. The price may not always be lucrative, but you will be assured of timely delivery and less hassles in the process. Also, local sourcing will definitely be better because you are familiar with your domestic market and it will be easy for you to communicate and get the product that you deserve.
