Do You Know These Different Plastic Polymers Used In Packaging?

We all take plastic packaging for granted. If you think this is an incorrect statement, then just ask yourself, “Do You Know the Different Plastic Polymers Used in Packaging?”The moment we come across any plastic packaging, we tend to consider them as being the same thing. But in reality, different plastic polymers are used in such packaging.

Not only do these plastic packaging materials differ in texture and features, but they have different recyclability. Check out the common plastic polymers that are being used currently in packaging solutions.

PE – Polyethylene

This is the most common form of plastic packaging material that is being used in various applications which include lids, pouches, bottles, flow wrap and as a sealant (for trays). There are various applications of this form of plastic polymer. One of the main reasons behind its popularity is the recyclability of this material. It is possible to recycle it but the only constraint is the number of times a particular PR product may be recycled. On the basis of the quality of the material and the number of times it has been recycled, the material is used in compatible applications.

PP – Polypropylene

This particular packaging material is used commonly for the manufacturing of bottles and for wrapping meat trays. Its usage depends on the preference of the manufacturer as to which type of plastic packaging would be most compatible with his specific requirements. While it is possible to recycle this plastic polymer, the same is not conducted on a wide scale.

PS – Polystyrene

Common applications of this plastic polymer include pots and vegetable punnets. You might have seen this material being used in yoghurt pots. The rigid nature of this polymer makes it suitable for storing fluids and organic items. The material is durable enough to withstand normal handling. However, it would be futile to keep expectations of high durability from this material when used in a commercial application.

PVC – Polyvinyl Chloride

This is the third most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer today. It is available in both rigid as well as flexible forms which makes it a really versatile packaging material. By adding plasticizers such as phthalates, it is possible to make it even softer. But this depends on the specific usage requirements which needs to be checked with the intended application of this material. This is used in the manufacturing of cards, non-food packaging, bottles, etc. PVC is capable of being recycled approximately 7 times and has a lifespan of around 140 years.

PA – (Polyamide or nylon)

While this may not be a sustainable packaging option, it certainly serves well as a barrier. This is used as a component of trigger sprays and also as a film (flexible form) owing to its characteristic properties. You may find this in fabrics, classical guitar strings, pipes, etc. But in terms of packaging, you can find this material in packaging paper which are used for creating a complete barrier between the stored component and the external environment.
